    Mode

The mode can be used for both categorical and numerical data sets and locates the most frequently used or recorded value in a set of data. For example, consider the following scenario: A soccer coach recorded the total number of times each of his forward players scored during the regular season. There were 8 forwards on the team and the number of times each player scored is as follows: Player 1: 15, Player 2: 9, Player 3: 11, Player 4: 9, Player 5: 11, Player 6: 9, Player 7: 9 and Player 8: 3. What is the mode? After analyzing the team’s stats on goals scored by forwards during the regular season, it is evident that the number which is most common is 9. Thus, the mode is equal to 9. Additionally, to make it easier to identify the mode, it may be useful to order all of the data points from smallest to largest so that they are organized in a clear manner. For example, here are the values from the case above reordered: 3, 9, 9, 9, 9, 11, 11, 15. Now it becomes exceedingly obvious that 9 is the mode when the team statistics are ordered from smallest to largest. © BrainMass Inc. brainmass.com March 18, 2024, 10:09 pm ad1c9bdddf
