Role of Assessment:

Why is assessment important in counselling? Assessment is important for counselling practitioners primarily because it allows them to measure, diagnose, probe, explore and evaluate a subject/client so that they can come to understand the issues and elements involved for the purpose of making a diagnosis. Seen as the first stage of any treatment process in counselling, its fundamental importance is the fact that without proper evaluation and diagnosis, the counsellor is unable to prescribe a treatment program that has the potential to work as problems of an emotional, behavioural and psychological nature requiring specific treatment programs due to the very personal nature of issues. While problems fall within the general description of certain issues, the way they manifest in individual cases are specific and as such, treatments, while falling under similar headings, have very specific elements that are put together for the unique needs of the individual.
