The references provided will be predicated upon healthcare outcomes and whether improvements occurred as a result of the passage of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). This particular reference focuses on cancer care and uses a systematic literature review approach wherein researchers reviewed approximately 20 previous studies that were published prior to 2017. The prior studies primarily focused on a specific part of the ACA, the single provision option in regard to cancer control. The researchers in this article focused on data maturation that has occurred over the course of the last 6 years that have addressed gaps in the previous research to provide a more comprehensive analysis to attempt to provide insight into the impact that ACA has had on cancer care since its passage.

The article was able to derive information from well-designed studies capable of analyzing the emerging policy issues while also analyzing whether ACA has afforded poor individuals and minorities more healthcare provisions and coverage to address the significant gaps in cancer diagnosis, survivability, and preventive measures that have traditionally been unattainable for minority and poor citizens. Researchers sought to ascertain whether the cancer control continuum resulted in more effective cancer treatment for minority and poor patients as a result of the ACA legislation.

This article focused on whether the passage of the ACA legislation was successful in reducing one of the biggest problems with uninsured Americans, which is the costs associated with millions of Americans being forced to go to Emergency Room Departments for all forms of their healthcare. Therefore, the Affordable Care Act sought to significantly reduce the number of U.S. citizens who rely on Emergency Room Departments for their primary source of care as a result of a lack of healthcare insurance. The authors wanted to help provide insight into whether uninsured patients were able to obtain insurance through the ACA, which would significantly drop the number of uninsured patients who previously relied on Emergency Rooms for their healthcare.
