Third party conflict resolution
Your role is Mana Kawasaki, the director of Human Resources. Recently, the
accounting department went and hired two interns on their own initiative without
permission. You are concerned for several reasons:
First, the intern program comes out of your budget.
Second, both interns are white males, son of Mark Fernandez. You are
concerned about the E.E.O. implications.
Third, the intern program involves some general overall orientation and
development work before students are assigned to projects, and these students
will be out of phase.
Fourth, from your view there seem to be better applicants.
Finally, you feel it is necessary to begin establishing Human Resources'
"territorial rights" and this is as good a time as any. You have a good case.
With these thoughts in mind you called Emily Caulfield, VP of Accounting and
she put you off before you had a chance to explain your concerns. Thus, you
called Ned Samuel to discuss the problem. You report primarily to the senior VP
of Human Resources of Blue Veer, who works at another location and only have
an indirect ("dotted line") reporting relationship to Samuel. Nevertheless, since
Samuel manages the offices you work in, he has the responsibility to try to
handle this problem.
You only had a chance to tell Samuel the basic problem on the telephone, but
not any of the details. You know Samuel will expect some compromise from you,
and you are willing to seek common ground, provided most of all of your five
concerns are somehow alleviated.
# Ned Samuel is the executive VP Marketing and head of the main office staff for
Blue Veer Corporation.

I am in the role of Mana Kawasaki, who is the Director of Human Resources. I'm faced with an issue of the Accounting department hiring two interns without approval. Also, the interns may pose Equal Employment Opportunity issues, because of the race of the interns. More importantly, the hired interns are not the most qualified based on the applications that I reviewed. Further, the unauthorized interns will not be able to complete the required training and follow the normal intern program path. Finally, I have to exert control over the program because the interns are paid from my department's budget and to ensure success of the program. I have been unable to discuss the issue with Emily Caulfield, VP of Accounting. Therefore, I ...
