Explain the following quote as to why you think it is a good example term "Quantitative Research"

"The typical American child now spends about twenty-one hours a week watching television?roughly one and a half months of TV every year....Outside of school, the typical American child spends more time watching television than doing any other activity except sleeping. During the course of a year, he or she watches more than thirty thousand TV commercials. Even the nation's youngest children are watching a great deal of television. About one-quarter of American children between the ages of two and five have a TV in their room,"

Find a sociology "term" that fits the following quote and explain why it is a good example

"The fast food industry now employs some of the most disadvantaged members of American society. It often teaches basic job skills?such as getting to work on time?to people who can barely read, whose lives have been chaotic or shut off from the mainstream. Many individual franchisees are genuinely concerned about the well-being of their workers. But the stance of the fast food industry on issues involving employee training, the minimum wage, labor unions, and overtime pay strongly suggests that its motives in hiring the young, the poor and the handicapped are hardly altruistic,"

This following is an example...
Example: "In many respects, the fast food industry embodies the best and the worst of American capitalism at the start of the twenty-first century - its constant stream of new products and innovations, its widening golf between rich and poor."

Answer:
Within this one quote we can analyze the fast food industry from both the functionalist and conflict perspectives. The functionalist, who focuses on how society is structured to maintain its stability, would argue that the first part of the quote illustrates how this particular industry is responsible for new products, new ways of conducting business, new ways of eating that are conducive to our fast paced life styles and numerous jobs for unskilled workers. On the other hand, the conflict theorist, who contends that social behavior is best understood in terms of conflict or tension between competing groups, would focus on what Marx considered the exploitation of workers by owners. The conflict theorist would point out that the capitalists, the owners of fast food chains, take advantage of employees by offering low pay and little or no benefits to increase profits, which inevitably contributes to the "widening golf between rich and poor."

Analysis of selected Passages from a Sociological Perspective

Passage 1

Explain the following quote as to why you think it is a good example of the term "Mass Media"

"An ad of their seeking franchisees later spelled out the benefits of the system: Imagine- No Carhops-No waitresses-no dishwashers-no bus boys-the McDonald's System is Self Service!"

Analysis:

When we talk of Mass Media we are referring to that section of the Media aimed at having the most penetrating, most universal exposure. Media derives from the term Medium indicating a means of communication that stores and distributes information and data. Generally, when we say Media people right away think of the Press, television, the internet, radio, publications. This is right. However, it can also indicate a singular method for the purpose of relaying and storing information like 'audio-based media' or refer to those working in the industry, i.e. 'People from the media'. Mass Media then is that organization that seeks to relay and store information and data aimed at a national and global audience. A good example of this is CNN, BBC, Time Warner B.V., HBO, MSN, and Google. Whatever their nature, their audience target is universal. They always seek to make their content to be appealing either to a singular segment (i.e. housewives, teens, men) or to a broad spectrum (the entire nation via newspapers that contains varied topics to cover the entire social strata from cartoons to current events to gossip). The statement above is an example of an opinion-grabbing statement. It is written in a manner that people can easily relate. This people, the masses for whom the statement is aimed are those who know and understand or can easily see the truth about the statement re: Macdonald's self-service system. Almost every American has eaten at a McDonalds. McDonald's is not just in America, it's everywhere around the globe. If one looks at the claims about the benefits of the McDonald's franchise - it is verifiable to be true. There are no waitresses. People bring their own tray to the table. There are no dishwashers; all the eating materials are disposed of in bins after dining. There is no need for bus boys or carhops - the drive-through system has taken care of this. This statement therefore can easily be understood by a universal audience making it a good example for the Mass Media label.
