The DNP Essentials (AACN, 2006) outline a number of competencies for organizational and systems leadership for indirect care perspectives related to and systems leadership. Learning that represents the DNP skills, knowledge, and integrative abilities to meet the pertinent DNP competencies as a result of active learning.
1. Develop and evaluate care delivery approaches at the micro, meso, and macro system levels that meet current and future needs of patient populations based on scientific findings in nursing and other clinical sciences, as well as organizational, political, and economic sciences.
2. Ensure leadership and accountability for quality of healthcare and patient safety for populations with whom you may work.
3. Develop and/or evaluate effective strategies for managing fiscal and economic dilemmas inherent at the various system levels within the healthcare organization.

Healthcare leadership is placated upon organizational and systems leadership, which requires DNP educated leaders to emphasize quality nursing practices, ongoing improvement of health outcomes, and policies that are capable of ensuring patient safety. Therefore, DNP nursing leaders obtain the expert ability to identify healthcare system issues while also providing the resources and tools to ensure that the organization can facilitate organizational-wide compliance with rules and policies that ensure quality healthcare delivery. DNP educated nurses are well versed in political skills, systems thinking, and the business and financial acumen because the DNP program provides the necessary education needed for DNP leaders to successfully address system perspectives. This allows DNP leaders the ability to efficiently analyze nursing practices while ensuring the quality of care and reducing costs.
