Gun violence in the United States is extremely high for a nation with such wealth - the homicide rate in the U.S. is seven times higher than the combined rate of 22 other high income countries and over 31,000 people die each year from gun shot wounds (National Centre for Injury Control and Prevention, Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, 2012). Gun violence is affecting the health of our nation and must be reconsidered to stop the deaths and violence. Considering this information, I recommend that gun control in the United States needs be reformed starting with Congress enacting laws requiring increased background checks at all gun shows, higher surveillance of in-state gun sale transactions made over the internet, and restricting commercially advertised gun sales (Richardson EG, Hemenway D. 2003).
