Discharge days can be used in calculating length of stay by using the following formula, METHOD 1: (TOTAL DISCHARGE DAYS / TOTAL DISCHARGES) = AVERAGE LENGTH OF STAY (IN DAYS). If a particular physician has days wherein patients are disproportionately staying more than other physician's patients, it will be deemed inappropriate.
