I believe that accounts should be worked internally indefinitely and never turned over to collection agencies. I understand that this may pose many problems and place a great deal of financial burden on the hospital, but turning bills over to collection agencies can also have serious consequences for the patient. Many patients that would not have the money to pay for their health care services are likely uninsured or underinsured. They are likely already financially strapped so turning them over to a collection agency would only hurt their credit and financial situation. Instead of turning over to collection agencies, medical providers should work with patients and help them with payment plans.
