    Top down vs. Bottom up

When utilizing either method the end goal is the same. Top-down is the more traditional approach where administrators, educators and teachers displaying a command and control approach with standardized testing. This is how the majority of schools have been, and continue to be, run. However, with a lot of focus on standardized testing, it is hard to know if the focus is really on the learning of students.

Pursuing a bottom-up method would be working from the ground up. Engaging students to be innovative and creative. Utilizing competency/mastery models allows each student to learn at their own pace. The students would then receive feedback and assistance from teachers based on their individual needs. This new approach would motivate students by keeping them engaged with team based projects. Instead of teachers lecturing they become coaches and mentors.

Implementing a combination of the two would be ideal. Implementing an approach where students can learn at their own pace and develop their creativity would help them to blossom on their own. Furthermore, standardized testing is necessary to see where the student is excelling and also lacking. So with the combination of the two, it would be apparent where the student needs more assistance while also not squashing their creativity.
