Many times when parents meet to discuss their child's IEP plans the focus is on academics. However, many students who have learning disabilities experience poor social skills and interaction with other children due to their insecurities. There are six interventions which we can focus on when trying to improve social skills for the students who have a learning disability.

1. Teaching Social Skills in Extra-Curricular Activities
Many students who have learning disabilities feel as if they have nothing to contribute. This is wrong. Parents must seek and find programs which their child may excel in from the very beginning. Parents should find opportunities which their child enjoys. This opens the lines of communication for the child. Parents should constantly be looking for opportunities which they child shows strengths and interest in throughout their early years. I personally had a learning disability which was not discovered until the ninth grade. I found great interest in Community Theater.
