They wanted to have a safety standard against which their management systems could be assessed and certified. The OHSAS 18001 is an occupational health and safety management system. It is designed to secure the companies against legal obligations by helping them adhere to these standards so that they develop a systems approach toward workplace health and safety management. It contributes to success in the achievement of the company's goals, reduction of accidents, injuries, and ill health costs which are usually hidden and underestimated. It is a structured approach to develop, implement, and maintain the ongoing improvement of occupational health, welfare and safety. It is an effective management tool to minimize risk to employees. It emphasizes pro-active and preventive practices as manifested in the identification of hazards and the evaluation and control of risks associated in the workplace setting.
The OHSAS 18001 is compatible with the ISO 9001 & 14001 standards. Therefore, if ISO adopts health, safety and welfare standards in the workplace, the benefits would be the same as what the OHSAS 18001 can give to the companies which includes all of the things mentioned above.
ISO standardization would require organizations to assess their occupational health & safety risks and hazards in terms of their processes, products and services. They have to ensure their appropriateness and their being operational by implementing and developing control to prevent accidents and injuries.
