Tween Magazine Marketing

I am trying to update and retain current subscribers for a Tween magazine geared to Tweens ages 9-14. I would not only like to market to 8 yr. olds (they're wanna be tweens) but retain current subscribers, especially those ready for magazines like Seventeen. My thoughts are incorporating a magazine blog??? where they can share ideas in and with an elite group of peers. I feel this would be educational and savvy in there perspective. Of course it would have to be monitored. This magazine also prides itself in their policy of refusing outside advertising.
The following are my two main focal points:

1. What types of market research should Tween employ to determine the market potential for magazine?

2. By targeting the 9 to 14 year old market, Tween will need to attract new 9 year old girls each year and will lose readership as they age. What are the challenges that this presents to Tween?

Hope this helps:
1. First look at demographics. How many households have 8-14 year olds in the U.S.? Also, how will tweens get magazine? Will it be by post? If so, what are demographics of families that receive any magazine? Online? Or perhaps web delivery?

To conduct research I'd start with a market research firm to get sample lists to solicit interest from new subscribers. I'd also survey current subscribers to find out what clubs they belong to (e.g., Girl Scouts) and then work on targeting these groups.

Depending on the magazine, I might also target all-girl parochial schools for this age group.

To do actual market research I would probably go through the moms- 8-14 year olds are typically not savvy enough to subscribe to a magazine. Find out how to reach moms' with daughters and survey them for market research. Here are the demographics ...
