The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a global rating system developed by the United States Green Building Council (USGBC) to assess the environmental performance of a building (www.concretethinker.com). The USGBC also urges the construction and building market to change towards sustainable green building designs. The LEED is a credit based system that allows projects to earn points for environmentally friendly actions taken during construction and use of a building. The LEED was started in an effort to develop a market-driven rating system for the development and implementation of green-building practices. The LEED certification program uses a whole building approach to sustainability by identifying building performance in five major areas of human and environmental health and they are sustainable site development, water savings, energy efficiency, materials selection and indoor environmental quality (www.usgbc.org).
