DIVERSITY ISSUES

In today's multi-stakeholder business models it is more important than ever to achieve consensus among diverse groups of people in order to ensure smooth running organizations that serve the needs of all stakeholders. Clarifying the impact of diversity on communication patterns and decision-making processes will help diverse groups of stakeholders in today's businesses to achieve this much needed consensus (Hemmati, Dodds, Enayati, & McHarry, 2001).

Diversity has a large impact on communication and decision-making because people do not communicate based on purely rational processes. On the contrary people's feelings, attitudes, and illogical ways of processing information also have a great impact on the way they communicate. While business decisions must be based on factual knowledge, cultural values, ideals, fears and stereotyping have a legitimate impact on the decision making process as well, and should not be discounted and ignored (Hemmati et al, 2001).

In the US in particular the role of Hispanic culture and the way it influences the communication pattern of its members is particularly important because the U.S. Hispanic population has grown rapidly to over 45 million people (Orrick, 2008). "Their population is growing at 3% per year vs. .8% for all other groups. Two generations from now, Hispanics will constitute 25% of the labor force as opposed to 12% today (Wallis, Paich & Borshchev, 2004).

This makes Hispanics an exceedingly influential cultural group whose role within American culture, society and business cannot be ignored. Thus it is important for American businesses to know how much acculturation is occurring within the Hispanic community and to what degree. ...
