Proxemics and Haptics in Cross-Cultural Counselling

Proxemics, the consideration of distance/space as it affects interaction in counselling, and haptics, the use of 'touching' or to communicate or convey ideas and meaning both fall under the non-verbal communication umbrella and both important considerations for counsellors seeking to design and strategize effective intervention or treatment for their clients for a host of issues. The application and utilization of proxemics and haptics vary from case to case. It gets a little more complicated however when putting in consideration cross-cultural counselling, especially when the counselor is of another ethnicity or culture. The counselor must consider the proxemics and haptics principles of the culture of his/her client so that he can plan his approaches, making sure that these elements of the treatment are respectful cultural and apply to the practices, standards or beliefs of the client. If the counselor does not consider the implications of these in a cross-cultural setting, it can hamper treatment and make it ineffective leading to further issues as well as ethical considerations.
