1. In 1-2 sentences, briefly compare the role of the Church in Europe during feudalism in the Middle Ages to its role politically, socially, and economically during the Renaissance.
- During both the Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the Christian church in Europe was central to society. The church was both a political and religious institution. It was also the source of education for so many. In the Middle Ages, the church preserved and distributed knowledge from ancient Greece and Rome, preserving classic works in government, philosophy and mathematics that has become the basis for Western civilization. But while in the Middle Ages, the economic power of the church was good, it was during the Renaissance that the extravagance of human expression in the arts and literature reached a height, and most of these efforts was sponsored and influenced by the church including the works of Leonardo da Vinci, Donatello, Raphael and Botticelli (The Collector 2022).
