This statement is made because it is representative of the necessity to address the underlying reality that nursing as a profession has yet to attain the necessary theoretical framework to establishes the profession as a discipline. Therefore, the lack of a consensus that would project the necessary skills, education, and specialized issues that are appropriate for the nursing profession has resulted in the profession not being capable of obtaining the respect that it deserves within the medical community. This is what Schlotfeldt meant by his statement.
