It is well-documented that the more education a person has the more likely the individual will have better health. The self-empowerment comes from understanding options that are available and better self-care/prevention of illness.
According to GINA KOLATA (New York Times, 1-3-07) "There is evidence that people with more powerful jobs and, presumably, with more control over their work lives, are healthier and longer lived." Adriana Lleras-Muney writes about a relevant study of economists in 1969 and says, "If you want to improve health, you will get more return by investing in education than by investing in medical care." A holistic medical provider will be mindful of body, and mind in treatment. The clinician that simply analyzes symptoms and offers a drug or band aid but fails to listen or address other stressors in a patient's life may fail to adequately treat a problem. Looking at those living in poverty, with limited access to good education and resources, a provider would benefit from addressing mental health along with physical issues for collective health and wellness.
