In reference to the changing landscape that is currently occurring within the healthcare field, it's imperative to understand the reasoning behind the shift from a fee-for-service model of care toward a pay-for-performance model. The American healthcare system is the most expensive system in the world, and much of the expenses associated with this form of care are a result of waste and other non-improving measures that don't improve quality of care for patients. Therefore, most of the emphasis over the last decade has been on improving the quality of care provided to patients and reducing costs. The change that has occurred has been a result of many different factors including hospitals losing profits, regulatory and marketplace forces, and changing federal reimbursement policies.
