Positive Sexuality and Healthy Sexual Functioning

Human sexuality, in a narrow sense, is the ability of humans to have sexual relations and experience, to act and respond in an erotic manner. In a broader sense; however, it is both cultural and physical, as it encompasses attitudes, ideas and constructs about sexual attraction. Whereas in some cultures human sexuality is something that is taboo as an idea, spoken about only in hushed tones, in other cultures it is 'out there', celebrated and made into topics of conversation in daily life. It can refer to sexual attractions between individuals, typically between men and women and, in this case, sexuality is construed as related to the human need to/capacity for reproduction. Sexuality, in a sense, fuels the ability of human beings to continue as a species and produce offsprings who have the ability to do the same. But attraction is not just between individuals of the opposite sex - sexuality can also refer to sexual 'types' as some have same-sex preferences as in the case of gays and lesbians and those who go further to express their sexuality - i.e. transsexuals/transgenders who through surgery and hormonal treatments attempt to correct what they perceive as the 'wrong body'. Now positive sexuality is the attitude of seeing sexuality as an important element to 'living' - that to have sexual and erotic experiences is normal, even vital to life. Repression, construing sexuality in a negative light through religious beliefs, even denying sexuality - this is all unhealthy in this sense as it goes against the idea that to have a fulfilled and anxiety ...
