Healthy Sexuality in Life Stages

List some of the qualities you think are needed for healthy sexuality.

Choose a life stage —childhood, adolescence, adulthood, or aging—and write a short, hypothetical case study that shows a couple or family presenting with a sexual concern relevant to one of these life stages. Consider dimensions of diversity such as gender, race or ethnicity, religion, sexual orientation, and disability, when developing your case.

Consider how the healthy sexual development framework from the article by McKee et al. (2010) might apply to clients of all ages. In your discussion, identify which tasks from the McKee model might be relevant to the presenting problem in your case study. Use relevant literature to identify other needs the clients might have, and discuss how you would work with the clients in therapy.

Research indicates that a healthy sexuality is linked to the normal sexual response. For instance, Masters and Johnson (1981) refer to normal healthy sexuality as occurring in four phases. The first is the excitement phase that is based on a gradual increase in sexual arousal associated with biological changes (e.g., increased heart rate, elevated blood pressure). Following this stage is the plateau phase and other physical changes occur (e.g. erection in the male; thickening of the vagina in women). Next, a phase takes place in which there is the experience of a climax or orgasm. Finally, according to Masters and Johnson, there is the resolution that consists of a drop in arousal accomplished by a desire. This pattern is considered to be the normal response sex cycle (Masters and Johnson-www.aspu.edu).
