Introverts and Extroverts: Susan Cain's "Quiet"

Susan Cain wrote her book, "Quiet: The Power of Introverts in a world that can't stop Talking" (Cain 2012) as an argument against what she perceives as erroneous Western cultural practice - the undervaluing of the traits and capabilities of introverted people which to her leads to a "colossal waste of talent, energy and happiness" (Cain 2012). Cain shares that she grew up in a scholarly home - it is a home that values reading and solitude where members enjoy thinking and grappling with problems and issues in a measured manner that looks to thinking through and processing information. She shares however that when she was 9, her vision of a quiet world that allows her to read and think was shattered by a summer camp experience where the social dynamics was the opposite of quiet solitude - camp counselors were loud and encouraged to be outgoing for doing so does not encourage 'camp spirit'. She competed with others in Wall Street and became a negotiator. These roles led her to step into the shoes of an 'alpha', someone able to be in the limelight where 'socialising is an extreme sport', making connections in a social network for influence where extroversion is excessively and misguidedly respect and seen as ...
