This poem seeks to elicit a passion within the reader that seeks to refute the stereotypical narrative of minorities who live in under-privileged communities as being condemned to a life of lack or lack of passion. The author focuses on his own upbringing in an area considered a ghetto in the state of California. The author is commonly referred to as a "ghetto poet" as a result of the content of his poetry, but in this specific poem, he wanted to show that he is multi-faceted and "life" is multi-faceted. In reference to being a minority within a majority white-country, the author also elucidates upon the importance of navigating away from the white gaze. The white gaze has been highlighted since Toni Morrison's transformational work wherein many minority poets are given an opportunity to write about their under-privileged backgrounds and how it informs their writing but are often confined to this space by the largely white literary industry where their poetry is sold and read.

In essence, it's important when reading this poem that the reader recognizes that they should never feel as if they are limited to being relegated to one position in life. Mr. Torres mostly writes about his life in the barrios' but he didn't want to only be relegated to this type of writing as he sought to convey that he was a complex person and not simply a "barrio/hood" ...
