Portfolios have become a popular form of assessment because they allow assessments to be made of a student's formative process, or show how students have improved their work over time. This is one possible focus of a portfolio. The other portfolio focus, which is perhaps the more common focus, is to assemble and display in a portfolio examples of a student's BEST work created during a class or a career. Portfolios can be physical ones, with actual artifacts enclosed, or digital ones, with scanned images/work, on a CD-ROM (usually).
