Google is a company that prides itself on integrity and the globally known motto of Don't Be Evil. Therefore, when going public in 2004, it was able to maintain this brand image despite the fact that IPOs' have traditionally been associated with greed and a lack of integrity in regard to tech companies that went public before Google's public offering. This Case Study explores how Google was able to offer a public auction for its IPO that was in accordance with their global brand and image as the researcher establishes a link between the deal structure of the IPO and Google's brand image that facilitated the success of an otherwise paltry IPO performance by the company. Because Google utilized an auction structure that was in accordance with their core ideals, they were capable of reinforcing their globally recognized image as innovators who were egalitarian, playful, trustworthy and ethical despite their IPO performance not being elegant or efficient.
