Since the advent of the Industrial Revolution, workforce structure has changed dramatically. Organizations across the country, regardless of their sizes, evolved into unique workplaces with their unique work-environment.

The purpose of this essay is to explain the concepts that have been embedded into today's organizations' vocabularies; Organizational Behavior, Organizational Culture, Diversity, Communication, Organizational Effectiveness and Efficiency, as well as Organizational Learning. The objective of this essay is to provide examples of how these concepts and terms relate to working for the NYC Department of Education

Organizational behavior (OB) is the study of how individuals and groups behave in organizations. "This is done by interpreting people-organization relationships in terms of the whole person, whole group, whole organization, and whole social system. Its purpose is to build better relationships by achieving human objectives, organizational objectives, and social objectives" (http://www.nwlink.com/~donclark/leader/leadob.html). In one an organization that I was part of, human resource department studied organizational behavior in order to track, monitor and compile metrics on efficiency and why people work in certain ways. This information is than used to improve the use of resources and thus improve overall efficiency. The concept of OB is significant for the NYC Department of Education, as it focuses on clearly defining psychology of the department. Once the psychology is defined it is easy to see what works and what requires development, as OB is crucial in organization's success and development.

Organizational culture describes the attitudes, experiences, beliefs and values of an organization. "The organization's base rests on management's philosophy, values, vision and goals. This in turn drives the organizational culture which is composed of the formal organization, informal organization, and the social environment.
