What is the most effective way for companies to monitor employee motivation, satisfaction, and performance? What are its advantages and disadvantages?

Job reports are highly used to determine if an employee is satisfied with their job. Job related surveys are also done yearly in some work environments to capture what the status of satisfaction is with the company's job satisfaction. Indicators that employees are very happy with the positions they have shine through when noticeably the employee works longer hours, willing to be trained up, has a positive attitude, is very enthusiastic, is determined to be successful, and seek promotions. The indicators that employees are not happy at all are employee goes to and from work not working overtime, is not interested in training of any kind, doesn't have work friends, has a negative attitude, is very critical, is lazy, is not ambitious, and doesn't seek promotions. With every performance review, human resource departments try to include a survey for the employee to answer about the job they have and how they like their position and supervisors. The advantage is knowing how the employees feel and being able to resolve issues with them. The disadvantage is knowing that management will do nothing.
