During the Korean War, he volunteered and attended the army's Cook and Baker School. Thomas described his job as an army cook, having to feed 2,000 hungry soldiers teaching him "some important skills about the big picture of feeding a lot of people. After leaving the army, Thomas worked as a short order cook for a man who owned four franchises of Kentucky Fried Chicken. The franchises weren't doing well. The owner made a deal with Thomas that provided an incentive of 45% ownership if he were able to turn the business around.
