The number one reason many managers seem ineffective is their focus on their own careers. Often, an employee may be focused on getting ahead, rather than working towards the company's goals. As a result, they may get promoted because they take actions that are effective for their own gain; but in the long run these same managers are not successful. They are also hard to work for, because they are focused on their careers, so all actions taken are for their benefit. I work with a manager that is completely ineffective.
