As one of four HR managers for the Home Company, you have been asked to prepare a policy and communication and education process for several areas needing attention. Assume that all of these policies will address subjects that have until now been handled informally and inconsistently throughout the company. Policies need to be developed for: sexual harassment prevention, abuse of Internet use, attendance policy and performance management/ people development process.

Divide these 4 policies among the members of your HR team (small group). Each member should select one of these policies, research it using the course materials, the Library, and the Internet. Prepare a 2-3 page paper documenting the policy. This should include appropriate disciplinary procedure for offenses. Next, each individual group member must prepare a training or orientation piece on their policy via PowerPoint presentation.

Once this is accomplished, the best option for determining or developing performance standards would be to have a meeting with the HR manager, the management of the department, and a few of the employees from the same department. During this meeting, the involved parties will develop performance standards by using the following:

1. A list of 5-10 performance standards
2. The type of performance assessment technique(s) you will employ and why
3. The controls you have employed to eliminate or reduce errors or bias in assessment
4. Who will perform the assessment and why
5. How the organization should use the assessment results

The HR manager should be present as to ensure that HR guidelines are followed in the development process. The manager of the department should attend as they have pertinent information that relates to the company goals and expectations. The employees so that HR and management have an understanding as to what the front line employees actually do and how these goals will affect them.

It is extremely important to have the employees present and participate during the development of performance standards . Being part of the decision-making process will will create buy-in from the employee, thus passing it on to the other employees in a positive light. The employees that are part of this process should be chosen carefully and looked upon by the other employees as their "informal leaders". This will ensure buy-in from all employees.
