There are mass layoffs in the Northeastern Region of America. The patterns that are emerging are that layoffs take place after mergers/ takeovers of companies. For instance, Keane Inc. with head quarters in Boston was taken over by Caritor Inc., a company located in California, this led to the elimination of 92 employees from Keane. Inc. Consider the case of State Street and Investors Financial. These companies laid of 450 persons before the merger of the two firms took place. State Street has already announced that it will layoff 1,700 employees. The reason given for the layoffs is that it is important to reduce the number of employees so that duplication of positions are eliminated and the restructuring of the merged company can take place. The second trend that is emerging is that a fall in demand for costly products is leading to a reduction in business for companies that make costly goods and this leads to a reduction in jobs. For example, HP Hood had to lay off 80 employees because the demand for novelty products has fallen. The layoff took place in its ice cream plant in Suffield. .
