1. How does the Author characterize the sources of conflict within an organization?
The author characterizes the sources of conflict by describing situations in which conflict
can occur and explaining why it occurs. For example, in a cross functional team members may
become involved in conflict whey they believe they are upholding the loyalty of the units they
belong to rather than upholding the goals of the team itself (Guttman, 2009). Conflict is
described as being healthy or unhealthy, depending on the view of the organization. In the
situation described above conflict may be resolved by refocusing members of the cross
functional team on the goals for the team rather than on interests of the individual units. If
managers view conflict as healthy they are more likely to be able to manage conflict in a
constructive manner.
2. Is conflict resolution only within the jurisdiction of the HR people? What is/are the explanations?
Conflict resolution is a role HR employees can take on effectively. Guttman (2009)
believes that in order for HR departments to possess adequate conflict resolution skills they must
first practice conflict resolution within their own department, as an example ...
