The industry as a whole, which is the "courier industry" , faces unique challenges because of its seasonal hiring practices. UPS, FedEx, and even the United States Postal Services among others experiencing peak seasons during holidays such as Christmas. Therefore, companies within this industry hire tens of thousands of seasonal workers who only work during peak seasons, which is a deterrent for ensuring high levels of retention as employees who work as seasonal workers recognize that they are only temporary employees with no benefits and no long-term security with the company. This has led to issues in regard to recruitment and employee engagement because tens of thousands of employees who work in the courier industry lack job security and "normal jobs".

Whenever the season changes, FedEx along with other competitors within this industry end the temporary contracts with independent contractors who work in these seasonal positions, which results in resentment and a lack of commitment to companies within the industry that aren't committed to their employees.
