During our company's history, it has become apparent that we currently do not follow the affirmative action guidelines, which were introduced by President John F. Kennedy in 1961, as a method of redressing discrimination. (US Department of Labor 2008) At the company's last corporate meeting on April 22, 2008, the union council requested a review of our policies pertaining to affirmative action and also requested that, we, as a company, revise our corporate polices to encourage and strengthen local diversity relations.
After further review with the corporate board, the board stated that in the company's 50-year history, affirmative action has been in full force. We, the management staff of ABC Company beg to differ.
We, the management staff of ABC Company hereby request the company implement the following affirmative action and diversity committees to expand growth and expand knowledge throughout the company and the communities we serve.
Let it be known to the board that in addition to President Kennedy's guidelines, President Jimmy Carter consolidated all federal agencies that were required by law to follow the affirmative action plan into the Department of Labor. Before Carter did this, each agency-handled affirmative action in its own individual way, some were not as consistent as other agencies were. He created the Office of Federal Contract compliance Program (OFCCP) in 1978 to ensure compliance with the affirmative action policies. (Department of Labor 2008)
In today's society, many believe that affirmative action is nothing more than a "quota" for a company to wave the flag that they indeed hire minorities. The management of ABC Company feels differently. Management also understands that Affirmative action does not please everybody because affirmative action is thought of as a compromise.
