Total Quality Management (TQM) is a process of management that includes all process within the organization at every level to create a mistake free product, done right the first time. This type of management is not new. The particulars of this method are in use today in not only manufacturing, but also other areas such as academics, retail sales, and companies as diverse as Ford and UPS. It also do not limit quality control and improving work and processes to management. It includes everyone in the company. ISO 9000 is one program that uses TQM processes and is recognized internationally as a leading component in production improvements.
What TQM is exactly varies from company to company, but it includes considering each department as part of the process of meeting strategic goals of the organization. Every department, finance, accounting, marketing and public relations, sales, production, logistics, and management are all involved in the processes and must create and meet standards and goals that keep the company moving forward successfully. Each company focuses on the needs of its customers and the needs of the company and devises goals for the company. Different departments then create standards that will help the company meet these goals.
