Let's first criticize the reasons and details of the strike. The BC Public School Employers' Association (BCPSEA) which represents the province's boards of education in the negotiations with the B.C. Teachers Federation is proposing a zero pay or benefit increase for the length of new contract due to economic recession. The British Columbia Teachers' Federation (BCTF) (the labor union that represents all public school teachers in the province of B.C) has given 72 hour strike notice for Sept. 6 which is the first day of the school. Under the provisions of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms and the non-binding decisions of the United Nations International Labor Organization, education is not an essential service and they have the right to political protest.
