Leadership is a skill that is practiced and learned throughout the course of one's professional and personal life. It is the fundamental asset that incorporates innovative concepts within an organization's overall business structure, and facilitates the ethic behind teamwork within the realm of acceptable organizational behavior. Leadership is identified by his/her ability to adjust to a changing environment, assess the current process, recommend new processes and procedures, develop a strategic action plan, execute, deliver, and measure the outcome. A leader is a multifaceted director of an organization that possesses one or all of the following styles and/or characteristics of leadership such as: Transformational, Transactional, Charismatic, and Contingency.
According to James M. Kousez and Barry Z. Posner (2003), the criteria of leadership are to set up a standard that is an exceptional business model for subordinates to follow. Kousez and Posner identified five fundamental facets of exemplary leadership such as;
? Model the Way-In addition to being a leader that adapts to a changing environment, a leader must be the type of leader that leads by example to display to subordinates what is acceptable; to show subordinates how to exceed corporate expectations within the internal and external environments, and facilitate adequate organizational behavior. For instance, if a team leader desires to have a fully functioning team that is able to operate in various organizational tasks, than a team leader must demonstrate his/her ability to function properly in a multitude of different job functions in order for the team members to work towards adding value to the organization.
? Inspire a Shared Vision-Leaders integrate a picturesque vision of the future that cultivates an organizations forward progression. Subordinates or team members are committed to a vision they can believe in, or envision themselves achieving a certain goal, therefore a leaders primary job is to motivate their team to think outside of the box and to trust that a new innovative concept is needed in order to reach the desired outcome.
? Challenge the Process- "Leaders are pioneers-people who are willing to step out into the unknown. They search for opportunities to innovate, grow, and improve. But leaders aren't the only creators or originators of new products, services, or processes. In fact, it's more likely that they're not: innovation comes more from listening than from telling." (Kousez, et al, 2003)
? Enable Others to Act-Leadership is a collective effort. A leader works towards engaging their team to work. A leader who operates as a functional leader instead of a leader that only supervises subordinates, and delegates authority. Subordinates will express more loyalty, respect, admiration, and dependability for a leader who works alongside the team during difficult challenges as opposed to a leader who expects the team to handle challenges amongst themselves.
