The main similarity of job analysis and competency modeling is that both aim at identifying the knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics of a job. However, there are numerous differences between the two approaches.
Job analysis is concerned with identifying specific details regarding the requirements of a job position whereas competency analysis is concerned with identifying the linkage between the job and the organization as a whole.
