There are several laws that prohibit discrimination in the workplace. The violation of these laws can lead to penalties. The legal provisions include the Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 that disallows discrimination in the workplace based on race, color, religion, sex or national origin. In addition discrimination against women with regards to wages is disallowed by the Equal Pay Act of 1963. In the private sector qualified persons cannot be discriminated against on the basis of disabilities. This has been disallowed by the Title I and Title V of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990.
