When we're in a group, diversity among the group members plays a central role because with diversity comes individual backgrounds, cultures, and along with that, specific ways of communicating on both an individual and team communicative level. When we're part of a team that is diverse, we have to take various cultural traditions into consideration. People from some cultures won't be as open in a group setting because they are from cultures where autonomy is preferred over collectivism, and we will see in many cultures where being part of a group is the norm. When all of these elements come together, we can then see how diversity plays a role in the team communication setting. Each team member needs to be mindful of the other members in regards to their specific culture. This can actually work to the benefit of the team because many different styles of communication are incorporated into the group.

This can also present a problem if the communication pattern becomes dysfunctional, which is why a team leader or manager needs to lead a diverse group. Diversity can definitely be a hindrance when it becomes dysfunctional. If we have individuals that become resentful because those from other diverse backgrounds aren't used to an open and free style of group communication, ...
