The research problem that I have identified that could best be addressed by using a questionnaire survey is what are the key causes for long waiting times in the emergency department at Norton Hospital. First, a qualitative study was carried out in the Norton Hospital Emergency department. Based on the qualitative study it was found that the delay in the emergency department occurred because of time taken during diagnosis, because of triage, delays during admission in the hospital, the nonavailability of specialists, closing down of emergency centers and departments, crowding during busy times, and because of disasters. However, what the qualitative study did not reveal was the relative importance of each of the factors. The survey research will not reveal any new reason for long waiting times but will provide order as to the importance of each reason for long waiting times. This order will be known during the survey based on the attitudes and understanding of employees at Norton Audubon Hospital Emergency Department.

The survey research method that will be used is the descriptive research method. This method is appropriate because the research purpose is to identify the relative importance of the causes of delays in the waiting time of the emergency department. The descriptive survey research method in which all the personnel of the Norton Hospital Emergency Department will provide their opinion and attitudes towards each reason for long waiting time in the Emergency Department will provide statistically inferable data.
