Sensitization is an increase in response to a benign or innocuous stimulus when that stimulus is followed by an unpleasant stimulus. An often used example is with the sea slug Aplysia. If you touch the slug's siphon it briefly withdraws its gill. If you electrically shock the tail of the animal and then touch the siphon, it will withdraw its gill for longer even though the touch is not painful.
