1. What are some similarities across cultures? (Minimum of 200 words)

Cultural diversity is important because it affects everyone. Cultural diversity is more than racial classification, ethnicity, gender and sexual orientation. Cultural diversity encompasses the whole range of human experiences including but not limited to age, gender, racial classification, ethnicity, religion, socioeconomic class, physical disabilities, national origin, geographical location, political orientation, physical size and appearance. These factors influence the cultural experiences and backgrounds of individuals and groups. However, there are other "human" traits that are common across cultures.

For instance, across all cultures, cultural influences shape the framework within which people view the world and operate in their everyday approaches to life. They influence the distinct way in which people define and organize reality, their lifestyle, guiding beliefs and basic assumptions about life. This is common to all cultures. Most cultures promote respect and integrity in relationships, and adhere to a "do onto others, as you would have do onto you" attitude. Other similarities are the need for belonging, love and security (Maslow). We need social contact with other people, which is similar across all cultures. The need for approval, appreciation and recognition is also similar across cultures. However, the types of approval and appreciation differ somewhat across cultures. As well, the need to communicate with one another is a similarity across cultures, but yet, the way we communicate often differs somewhat across cultures.
Thus, it is important to consider similarities, as a pure focus on diveristy divides. Similation points to the similarities and commonalties that individuals from diverse cultural backgrounds have. Similation celebrates similarities that individuals have without attempting to modify or change other cultures. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/mi_m0DXK/is_n14_v13/ai_18978904
