Research on the Substance Abuse Subtle Screening Inventory-3 (SASSI-3) describes it as a psychometric instrument that is designed to make inferences about substance dependence disorder. The instrument scales have 14 face valid items that reflect a relationship to substance dependence, and items related to alcohol, and other drugs. According to Miller (1988), the items on the SASSI-3 are empirically derived (Miller, 1988) based on items borrows from the Minnesota Multiphaisc Personality Inventory (Hathaway, & McKinley, 1940). The subtle items on the scale are related to a wide variety of behaviors related to health, social interaction, emotional states, preferences, needs, interests, and values. Non-subtle items are asked directly about substance abuse and its usual consequences. The Alcohol vs. Drug Scale (ALD) is intended to show whether the client prefers alcohol or other drugs. "A high score usually indicates alcohol preference and a low score indicates drug preference" (Gray, 2001, p. 103).
