The primary difference between the two tests is that the NEO-PI-R (Costa & MCcrae, 1992) is constructed based on factor analysis that is designed to assess major traits and other personality factors. The Minnesota Multiphasic Personality (MMPI, Hathaway & McKinley, 1940) is designed for psychiatric assessment and diagnoses. It contains 566 true/false items. The test has ten clinical scales, and four validity scales. In addition, to the clinical scales and validity scales, the MMPI consists of Content Scales (Wiggins, 1966 as cited in Cohen & Swerdlik, 2005), and supplementary scales.
