It is a new idea that takes into account the fact that kids are taking longer to grow up. People in their 20s are still living at home and have yet to begin building their careers. This stage is 'emerging adulthood.'

Birth control has made it easier to avoid having children. 40 years ago, the early 20s was the time for that - no more. Also, a huge percentage of kids going to college and grad school - adult life, therefore, starts much later than 40 years ago.

Many in the early 20s see 'settling down' as a problem. Not a goal, but a trap. So 'emerging adulthood' is a new concept that deals with the period after adolescence and before one 'settles down' with a family and career.
