Adler and Gunderson (2008, p. 169) posit as organizations disperse globally, they have come to realize that leadership is a skill that most people need, not just a requirement of a few people at the top. Thus, Adler and Gunderson contend globally a company's success is clearly linked to the emotional intelligence of its leaders.

Emotional intelligence according to Daniel Goleman (2000), is the ability to manage ourselves and our relationships effectively. Goleman maintain emotional intelligence consists of four fundamental capabilities, self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, and social skills.

Pinos, et al (2006) postulate while technical skills and core competencies are essential for sustainable competitive advantage, the ability to outperform other organizations largely depends on how employees manage their relationships with others. In other words, Pinos, et al point out emotional intelligence helps an organization commit to a basic strategy, build relationships inside and outside that offer competitive advantage, promote innovation and risk taking, provide a platform to shared learning, maintain balance between the human and financial side of the company's agenda, and develop open communication and trustbuilding among employees and leaders.
