Emotional intelligence is a concept of the ability to reason with one's emotions. It involves many facets, such as using reasoning to communicate with others and to make wise decisions. Within the realm of reasoning, the ability to manage emotions is considered as well. Emotional intelligence relates to leadership, as a leadership position often requires the ability to make sound decisions. Leadership theories vary, from those that focus on natural innate abilities, to those that approach leadership as a set of ever evolving or developing skills. If leadership skills can be developed, the implication for emotional intelligence is that it too can evolve over time.
Some leadership theories focus on relationships between leaders and follows. When emotional intelligence is applied to such theories, it encompasses the ability to communicate effectively within the realm of the leadership environment. Emotional intelligence will then consider the ability to interact with followers or with those being led, in a manner than considers the leader's ability to encourage input and cooperation from others. In such an environment, the leader with greater emotional intelligence will be more likely to encourage group participation and consider other options, in the decision making process. Those with less emotional intelligence will not be as likely to consider the ideas and opinions of others and therefore, may tend to make decisions without the consideration of others. Emotional intelligence of a leader may ultimately affect the success level of the organization, as a more thorough evaluation of all the ideas and opinions regarding a decision will help identify those that may be most suitable for the organization.© BrainMass Inc. brainmass.com December 24, 2021, 9:10 pm ad1c9bdddf>
