Is this Method a theory of development, or is it considered an education approach? What are the three core issues in developmental psychology and how does the Montessori Method fair in regards to these core issues? These questions will be answered in greater detail to increase understanding of how the Montessori Method works and the possible benefits of using this Method.

The first core issue to be discussed is continuity versus discontinuity. Continuity is the gradual process of how a child changes. It is sometimes so gradual, that it can easily be not noticed. Montessori developed materials that allow the children to learn in steps that were easy for them to be able to master. She also developed special equipment to teach fundamental skills such as shoe tying and learning to button buttons (Crain, 2011). Learning in steps can also be accomplished by observing others. The Montessori methods allows the younger children in the group to learn by observing the older ones in the group (Lillard, 2006)
